How the four-plant limit works

Oregon applies the limit to the household. One adult may grow four plants, but four adults sharing the same residence may not grow 16. The total number of homegrown plants at the household must remain four or fewer at any time.

The statute’s visibility rule covers both the plants and the homegrown cannabis. An outdoor grow that can be seen from a sidewalk, street or other public place with normal unaided vision does not meet the rule. Use fencing, screening or an indoor location that actually blocks public view.

Possession and sharing are not sales

Oregon permits adults to store up to eight ounces of usable marijuana at a household under the adult personal-use provision. It also permits a noncommercial transfer of up to one ounce of usable marijuana from one adult to another. Accepting money, goods or services changes the transaction and is not covered by that personal-transfer allowance.

Medical cultivation is separate

The Oregon Medical Marijuana Program uses separate registration, grow-site and plant-limit rules. Do not apply the four-plant adult household rule to a registered medical grow without reviewing the current OMMP requirements for that patient and address.

1. Count the household. Include every adult-use plant at the residence.
2. Block public view. Check the grow from streets, sidewalks and other public places.
3. Check property rules. Review the lease and obtain permission before altering a rental.
4. Secure the space. Keep children, pets and unauthorized people away from plants, lights and electrical equipment.
5. Keep it personal. Do not sell homegrown cannabis.
