Quick answer: Yes. Ohio adults age 21 or older may grow up to six cannabis plants at their primary residence, with a maximum of 12 plants at one residence. The current rule is Ohio Revised Code section 3796.04, effective March 20, 2026.

Ohio home-grow rules in plain language

• Minimum age: 21.
• Per-person limit: no more than six homegrown marijuana plants for an adult-use consumer.
• Residence cap: no more than 12 plants at one residence.
• Location: the grow must be at the grower’s primary residence.
• Security: plants must be in a secured closet, room, greenhouse or other enclosed area that prevents access by anyone under 21.
• Visibility: plants cannot be visible by ordinary unaided sight from a public space.

Ohio’s current statute also excludes certain residences. Home cultivation is not authorized at specified family child-care homes, halfway or transitional facilities, or rental premises when the rental agreement prohibits home-grow activity.

What the current Ohio rule does not authorize

• Growing or processing homegrown marijuana anywhere other than the grower’s primary residence.
• Use, cultivation, processing, transfer or transport by anyone under 21.
• Hydrocarbon-based extraction of homegrown marijuana.
• Selling or profiting from homegrown marijuana.
• Growing cannabis on behalf of another person.

The current law allows manual or mechanical processing of a compliant home grow. That does not turn a home-grow allowance into permission for every extraction method or commercial activity.

Before you start

1. Use the current statute. Old articles that cite section 3780.29 may miss the rules effective in March 2026.
2. Count per adult and per residence. One eligible adult may grow six plants, but the residence cannot exceed 12.
3. Check the residence type and lease. The statute now expressly excludes some facilities and rental premises with a prohibiting agreement.
4. Secure and conceal the grow. The enclosure must prevent access by people under 21 and keep plants out of public view.
5. Keep the activity personal. Do not sell, profit from or grow for someone else under the home-grow rule.
