Grow Tent Setup Checklist: 2×4 vs. 4×4 Shopping List

Quick answer: A new grower does not need every smart controller or a matching-brand kit. Start with a tent you can reach, a light you can measure, correctly sized exhaust and odor control, one or two dependable circulation fans, an independent thermometer/hygrometer, safe timing and enough drainage capacity for the containers you actually plan to use.

Choose the footprint first

I usually route a new grower toward a 2-by-4 for about two medium plants or a 4-by-4 for about four, but plant count is not a law. Cultivar, training, veg time and container size change the answer. The important part is being able to reach every plant, remove runoff and work around the canopy without crawling through the room.

The complete shopping checklist

Build the list by function. Brand comes later.

• Tent: correct exterior dimensions, usable doors, sturdy poles and connectors, appropriate duct ports, removable spill tray and enough rated support for the equipment you will hang.
• LED light: the exact current generation, verified wall power, dimensions that match the canopy, usable dimmer, warranty and a believable coverage map.
• Inline fan: enough airflow after the carbon filter, duct bends and negative pressure are included.
• Carbon filter and ducting: matched diameter, secure clamps and a route that does not crush or sharply bend flexible duct.
• Circulation fans: gentle canopy movement without a constant high-speed blast at one plant.
• Independent thermometer/hygrometer: a simple second opinion even if the main controller has sensors.
• Safe timing and power distribution: devices rated for the real load, kept dry and arranged without daisy-chaining overloaded strips.
• Containers and drainage: saucers or a tray that can hold the largest realistic runoff event and can be emptied without moving the whole tent.
• Light-measurement method: a PAR meter or supported phone/diffuser workflow for mapping several canopy positions.
• Basic records: labels and a grow log for dates, settings, measurements and changes.

All-in-one kit or piece it out?

A kit wins when every included component fits the plan and the bundle price is genuinely lower at checkout. Piecing the room together wins when the bundle hides a weak light, undersized filter, disposable fan or controller you do not need.

Compare the complete cart, not the headline price. Include shipping, required accessories, seller, return terms and the cost of replacing the first component you already expect to outgrow. A smart controller has value only if you want the features and still have a safe manual fallback.

Do not transfer an old light review to a new listing

This is the biggest correction to the original video. The Spider Farmer lights I praised were older Samsung-based models. Current products with the same familiar names can use different diodes, drivers or layouts. I consider several of those revisions worse than the hardware I tested.
