Royal Queen Seeds Review: What HWGrow Observed

Quick verdict: HWGrow does not currently recommend Royal Queen Seeds as a first choice. That opinion comes from repeated intersex-expression and phenotype-mismatch reports shared in our grow community, including plants shown on this page. These are real owner/community observations, but they are not a random sample of every RQS order and they do not prove a company-wide failure rate.

That distinction matters. I can tell you why I would spend my own money elsewhere without pretending a Discord search is a laboratory study. RQS says its batches receive viability, vigor and quality-control testing. HWGrow’s concern is that those company claims do not resolve the grow outcomes our members documented.

What HWGrow observed

The pattern that changed my opinion was not one seed that failed to germinate. Growers shared plants that developed staminate flowers or “nanners,” and some reported that the finished plants did not resemble the structure or flower presentation they expected from the listing. Those are different problems and should be recorded separately:

• Germination or vigor: Did the seed sprout and establish a healthy seedling?
• Identity and phenotype: Did the plant’s finish time, structure, aroma and flower traits reasonably fit the documented line?
• Sexual stability: Did the plant express staminate flowers, and under what stage and stress conditions?
• Uniformity: How much variation appeared among seeds from the same labeled pack?

Mixing those categories turns a useful grow report into noise. A seed can germinate perfectly and still produce an unwanted phenotype. A stressed plant can express intersex flowers without proving that every sibling or every pack will do the same.

What this review can and cannot prove

The old version of this article used absolute wording that went further than the available evidence. The conclusion remains negative, but the reason is now stated correctly: the observed outcomes are enough for HWGrow to choose another source, not enough to calculate a brand-wide defect rate.

What Royal Queen Seeds says about quality control

RQS says that every seed batch is tested for viability, vigor and quality. Its published five-step quality-control process describes cleaning, size classification, professional-market coating and drying, plus sample germination testing. Its current U.S. company page says it ships from the United States and selects seeds from organic plants.

Those are RQS’s own statements. Germination testing is valuable, but it is not the same as publicly documenting parent plants, generation, lot-level phenotype results or sexual-stability screening. Before buying, ask what the company will provide for the exact cultivar and lot—not only what appears on a general quality page.

Feminized seeds are not automatically unstable

A plant grown from a feminized seed is not automatically a “herm.” Feminized describes how the seed was produced; it does not guarantee or condemn sexual stability. Intersex expression can involve genetics, development and environment together. Severe light leaks, heat, root stress, late flowering or physical damage can complicate the diagnosis.

That does not mean every problem should be blamed on the grower. Ethical breeders screen candidates under documented conditions, remove lines that express too easily, keep parent and lot records, and avoid turning one famous strain name into a guarantee. How to evaluate any cannabis seed bank

1. Confirm the breeder and generation. A famous cultivar name is not a pedigree. Look for the parents, generation and who actually made the seeds.
2. Look for full-plant evidence. Finished-flower glamour shots do not show stretch, branching, flower time, uniformity or weak plants. Favor documented grow journals.
3. Separate seller reviews from cultivar results. Fast shipping and germination do not prove that the mature plant matches the listing.
4. Ask about lot-level testing. A general “tested genetics” statement is weaker than the sample size, conditions and pass/fail criteria for the batch being sold.
5. Read the replacement policy before germinating. Know what evidence and deadlines apply if seeds fail.
6. Label every plant. Record source, cultivar, pack or lot, plant number, germination date and important stress events through harvest.
7. Compare more than one plant when legal and practical. One standout or one failure cannot show the range of a seed population.
