Quick verdict: I do not currently recommend Royal Queen Seeds as a first choice. That opinion comes from repeated intersex-expression and phenotype-mismatch reports shared in our grow community, including plants shown on this page.

I would spend my own money elsewhere. RQS says its batches receive viability, vigor and quality-control testing. My concern is that those company claims do not resolve the grow outcomes our members documented.

HWGrow community discussion documenting intersex expression in plants grown from Royal Queen Seeds
One of the first-party community records that led to this review.

What I observed

The pattern that changed my opinion was not one seed that failed to germinate. Growers shared plants that developed staminate flowers or “nanners,” and some reported that the finished plants did not resemble the structure or flower presentation they expected from the listing. Those are different problems and should be recorded separately:

  • Germination or vigor: Did the seed sprout and establish a healthy seedling?
  • Identity and phenotype: Did the plant’s finish time, structure, aroma and flower traits reasonably fit the documented line?
  • Sexual stability: Did the plant express staminate flowers, and under what stage and stress conditions?
  • Uniformity: How much variation appeared among seeds from the same labeled pack?

Mixing those categories turns a useful grow report into noise. A seed can germinate perfectly and still produce an unwanted phenotype. A stressed plant can express intersex flowers without proving that every sibling or every pack will do the same.

Intersex expression matters because released pollen can seed nearby flowers. Record the plant, lot, environment and timing before drawing a wider conclusion.

What I am going on

Multiple growers shared negative outcomes involving labeled RQS seeds, and some plants showed visible intersex expression or disappointed growers in side-by-side runs. I can only speak to what I have seen and what growers have shared with me, and other growers may have a different experience. It was enough for me to choose another source.

What Royal Queen Seeds says about quality control

RQS says that every seed batch is tested for viability, vigor and quality. Its published five-step quality-control process describes cleaning, size classification, professional-market coating and drying, plus sample germination testing. Its current U.S. company page says it ships from the United States and selects seeds from organic plants.

Those are RQS’s own statements. Germination testing is valuable, but it is not the same as publicly documenting parent plants, generation, lot-level phenotype results or sexual-stability screening. Before buying, ask what the company will provide for the exact cultivar and lot—not only what appears on a general quality page.

Feminized seeds are not automatically unstable

A plant grown from a feminized seed is not automatically a “herm.” Feminized describes how the seed was produced; it does not guarantee or condemn sexual stability. Intersex expression can involve genetics, development and environment together. Severe light leaks, heat, root stress, late flowering or physical damage can complicate the diagnosis.

I do not blame every problem on the grower either. Ethical breeders screen candidates under documented conditions, remove lines that express too easily, keep parent and lot records, and avoid turning one famous strain name into a guarantee. The public balls, nanners and herms guide shows what to inspect and what the structures actually mean.

How to evaluate any cannabis seed bank

  1. Confirm the breeder and generation. A famous cultivar name is not a pedigree. Look for the parents, generation and who actually made the seeds.
  2. Look for full-plant evidence. Finished-flower glamour shots do not show stretch, branching, flower time, uniformity or weak plants. Favor documented grow journals.
  3. Separate seller reviews from cultivar results. Fast shipping and germination do not prove that the mature plant matches the listing.
  4. Ask about lot-level testing. A general “tested genetics” statement is weaker than the sample size, conditions and pass/fail criteria for the batch being sold.
  5. Read the replacement policy before germinating. Know what evidence and deadlines apply if seeds fail.
  6. Label every plant. Record source, cultivar, pack or lot, plant number, germination date and important stress events through harvest.
  7. Compare more than one plant when legal and practical. One standout or one failure cannot show the range of a seed population.

The seven-factor cannabis strain selection guide helps match genetics to the room instead of buying the first result for a popular name.

Where Selfie Seeds™ fits

Selfie Seeds™ is HWGrow’s in-house genetics source. That relationship is disclosed because this is a competing seed-bank review. The recommendation is not “trust us because we own it.” Use the same standard: review the documented parent, actual plants, generation and intended room, then keep the lot attached to your own grow records.

Royal Queen Seeds review FAQ

Do you recommend Royal Queen Seeds?

No. Repeated negative grow reports in my community are enough for me to prefer other documented genetics.

Are all Royal Queen Seeds unstable?

I cannot say that. I can only speak to the negative outcomes my community documented and why they changed my recommendation. Evaluate the exact cultivar, lot, environment and records.

Does finding nanners prove the breeder is at fault?

Not by itself. Intersex expression can reflect genetics, development and environment. Photograph the structure and record timing, light leaks, temperature, root stress and nearby plants before assigning a cause.

How can I tell whether a seed-bank review is useful?

Look for labeled plants, more than one stage of growth, the exact cultivar and lot, disclosed incentives, environmental records and clear limits. Shipping speed alone is not a genetics review.

Why does HWGrow recommend Selfie Seeds™ in this review?

Selfie Seeds™ is HWGrow’s in-house seed bank, so that financial relationship is disclosed. Readers should judge it by the same parent, generation, lot and grow-record standards used for any other source.

These seeds sold are quite frankly the worst I have ever seen in terms of quality.

Comments

  1. Have had issues with RQS grows as well. Big ups for speaking out on this.

  2. Good job on calling out this company, they’ve tricked people with their trash genetics for long enough.

  3. I am honestly saddened by how many newer growers have been taken advantage of by RQS and their blatant lack of vetting when it comes to what seeds they are selling. I understand that herming can happen for many reasons but when all the data we’ve collected as a community shows way lower herm rates from other white label seed banks. It should be up to seedbanks to minimize the hermaphrodite trait in the seeds they sell by limiting the strains they hold which are reported on. 2/10 would not recommend RQS to my worst enemy.

  4. Have had issues with RQS in general with their ordering system and constant declines. the amount of issues in the discord with their seeds makes me afraid to plant any of the other seeds I bought from them seeing that I don’t want to waste any time on their herms…..

    1. Ben al jaren klant bij RQS en eerste jaar ECHT SLECHT
STRAWBERRY COUCH 1 kopen 1 gratis.

I have been a customer of RQS for years, and this is the first year that it has been REALLY BAD.
Strawberry Couch 1 — buy 1 get 1 free. I grew them in 3 different ways:
2 in DWC, 2 in coco peat, and 2 in universal potting soil.
All of them germinated, but after the first true leaves appeared they all fell over.

I grow in an OA tent with a Mars Hydro TS1000 and a 200W CFL, and nothing worked.

I will admit it is my first time growing again in about 30 years as a hobby, but my previous seeds were always good.

That’s why I’m writing this review. I can’t call them, otherwise I would have solved it differently.
I really feel cheated, especially because I buy from them every year.

  5. Love your dunk method. Looking at your holy Grail of feeding cannabis and weed – the dunk technique –
You prepared your feed bucket and you don’t run in for eight seconds. Do I still use that water to dunk the other plants as well? I know you said don’t use the runoff of water but what about the dunking Water can we reuse that or is it get all the extra salts from the dunk.

    1. Yes I reuse it as long as it’s not over 1000 ppm after the previous dunk. The trick is to only let minimal runoff drip back into the dunk and let the majority of the runoff spill into a separate container so the excess (unusable salts) doesn’t go back in. It should t really go more than 150 ppm higher than what it was originally.

  6. I recently just stopped using Royal queen seeds, cause I’ve had so many duds and they wouldn’t replace the duds that were replacing the duds from before that.

    1. Yea, smh Not a fan at all at their packaging, their customer service, their quality, their herm rate, their did rate. Everything is bottom tier.

  7. I can confirm RQS genetics are awful
Grew 5 x cookies gelato and every single one hermied.
Set up was perfect, no way am I taking the blame for their poor genetics..
    Stay well clear of them.

  8. I’ve grown Royal Queen seeds in the past. I like a few strains they have. But, I ordered 4 different type seed last order from them. 2 of the strains never germinated one seed. I reached out to Royal Queen seeds and never got a response. Germination guarantee is it worth anything. I for one will never order another seed from them.

  9. New grower here. Looking for recommendations for a realiable, quality seed bank. Any suggestions based on your own experience? Thank a million!

    1. If you like what you see in my content, try Selfie Seeds™ Check the discord too for hundreds of examples.

  10. Dammit! I have about 30 seeds in the fridge from RQS. Best suggested method for getting through my stockpile instead of trashing all the seeds? Genetic ID test to weed out herms and males?

    1. Gentic testing wont identify the herms, I would just hunt them out and be vigilant around week 3-5 in bloom and scope for nanners and balls daily.
