Short answer: the Medic Grow Fold-800 I bench-tested in 2024 delivered a lot of output for its launch price. I measured 817.4 watts at full power, 1,160 µmol/m²/s in the center at 18 inches and 790 at 32 inches. The biggest compromise was simple: my tested unit needed a separate controller to dim it.

Medic Grow still lists a Fold-800, but current variants, controllers, specifications, price and warranty must be checked directly. What I measured on the 2024 fixture

  • Physical size: roughly 44 inches square when fully unfolded.
  • Full-power draw: 817.4 watts after the meter stabilized.
  • Center PPFD: about 1,160 µmol/m²/s at 18 inches and 790 at 32 inches.
  • Low reference: the separate controller reached about 200 center PPFD at 16 inches while drawing roughly 112 watts.
  • Higher reference: at about 544 watts and 16 inches, I measured 911 in the center and an average around 610 at the outside positions I checked.

Those last readings were useful spot checks, not a complete 4×4 grid map. They showed the fixture could cover the target range I wanted, but they did not prove that every square of the canopy received the same intensity.

The real tradeoff was the controller

The folding metal frame felt solid and fit a 4×4 tent well. The cable needed a little hand positioning so the fixture could open flat, and the supplied hanging hardware did not include the four rope ratchets I prefer for leveling each corner.

The tested fixture also lacked a built-in dimmer. I used an external GLC controller, and the old article listed several adapters and third-party options. Those accessory prices and compatibility claims are stale. Before buying, confirm whether the exact current Fold-800 variant includes control hardware and which current controller, cable and adapter it requires.

My measured verdict: the 2024 Fold-800 was powerful and inexpensive, but the complete system price included the controller and hangers. Compare the working setup—not just the fixture’s sale price.

Corrections to the original lighting rules

The video calls 200 and 800 PPFD the only two measurements that matter and recommends keeping the light 16 inches away. That was my simple starting method, not a law. A current setup should use several canopy readings, plant response, wall draw and environmental data.

The inverse-square rule in the video is a useful warning that intensity may climb quickly at close range, but an extended LED fixture is not a perfect point source.
