ViparSpectra KS3000 Review: What My 2022 Test Actually Showed

Quick answer: My 2022 ViparSpectra KS3000 sample produced weaker Photone readings than I expected in a 3×3 tent. That is a useful result, but it was one light measured with one phone-based setup—not proof that every KS3000 was bad or that another reviewer lied.
Old-model warning: This review covers the KS3000 hardware I tested in April 2022. ViparSpectra’s current official site shows a sold-out used KS3000 listing, while its KS Series collection currently contains no new products. The used listing also calls the KS3000 a 320-watt light, while the old video described the tested sample as 300 watts. What my KS3000 test actually measured
I hung the light in a 3×3 tent and used the Photone app on an iPhone to record a nine-point grid at three heights. The on-screen chart shows these ranges:

The result that bothered me was not one weak corner. I expected a stronger map from a light that nearly filled the tent, and the readings did not match the expectations I had formed from other demonstrations. That disagreement is worth publishing. It just needs to be described as a disagreement between tests, not evidence of a secret sponsorship arrangement or a different factory unit.
What this test cannot prove
- It was one sample. The right side reading looked unusual, so a defect or sample variation was possible. I did not test a second KS3000.
- It used a phone app. Photone is useful for repeatable canopy mapping, but the phone, diffuser, operating system, app calibration and spectrum setting all affect the result.
- The old video did not document wall power with a watt meter. A product name or advertised wattage is not a substitute for measured draw.
- The comparison light was 400 watts. Same price does not make two fixtures an equal-power or equal-efficiency comparison.
- It was not a full grow. The video did not measure yield, flower quality, heat over a cycle, long-term reliability or warranty service.
- Hanging height changes the map. Moving a light closer can increase intensity, but it can also reduce uniformity, shrink headroom and raise the chance of light stress.
What about the 8-to-12-inch counterpoint?
Readers correctly pointed out that some KS-series users ran their lights closer to the canopy. My own chart also shows that 12 inches produced higher readings than 18 or 24 inches. That does not make 8 to 12 inches a universal setting. A useful hanging height must balance intensity, edge-to-edge coverage, heat, available headroom and the plant’s response.
Use the manufacturer’s instructions as a starting range, then map the whole canopy. Do not chase one impressive center number. If the center is too strong while the edges are weak, raising the light or changing the layout may give the plants a more usable field even when the peak number falls.
A note about disclosure
The old page contradicted itself: one paragraph said I bought the KS3000 and another said I received it free. The video says companies often sent lights for review, but it does not clearly establish how this exact sample was acquired. The honest disclosure is therefore acquisition status unknown. That uncertainty should not be filled in with a guess.
The original reaction also questioned whether other reviewers had an agenda. I do not have evidence to make that claim. Different hanging heights, meters, calibration, tents, wall power, hardware revisions and sample variation can all produce different results. The better response is to publish the method, show the raw grid and let another grower reproduce it.
How to test any grow light you receive
- Photograph the model label, driver, diode board and listing before the page changes.
- Measure actual wall power at every dimmer setting you plan to use.
- Warm the fixture up, keep the sensor level and map a repeatable grid at several heights.
- Record the phone, app version, diffuser or quantum meter, spectrum setting, tent size and reflective surfaces.
- Compare uniformity and usable coverage, not only the brightest cell.
- Watch the plants and document a completed grow before making a long-term recommendation.

I am thoroughly dissapointed also purchased a KS2500 and presonally contacted Viparspectra and told them that the operating instructions are conclicting. I did exactly what they said and i’m throwing away plants again. This light is set at 30 inches on 25 percent.
Yeah. It’s such a shame that people are saying this light is good. It’s terrible. Sorry you had to experience it but I warned people and everyone came and tried to slander me saying I have crap tools
I have the XS4000 and it is doing quite well. I used Photone with just a piece of paper over the lens on free mode, not set to full spectrum LED. I get close to what is stated in the manual for PPFD.
thats what they replaced my KS light with when I returned it, it has much better light intensity. They went backwards with the bar lights.
Hey, 8-12 inches has been shown to be its ideal flowering range. The ks3000 can get really close to your plants without burning em, which is a bonus imho because space is so precious in a 3×3 vertically. It also fills out a 3×3 in its entirety with uniform coverage. Usually higher is better, but not with this one. Love your content, just thinking this light wasn’t reviewed at its best. Fwiw, I would’ve gone about things just like you did.
8-12 inches away is a sureshot way of foxtailing 90% of the strains out. Lighting follows exponential influence in intensity with distance.
Any well versed grower will know that a reading at 10 inches away is fluff data.
I never go closer to 12 inches and I have a video I have been chopping up with actual examples of plants that burn or foxtail from being too close.
Thislight isnt terrible, youll be able to grow some decent larf or maybe buds when really close as long as the strain doesnt foxtail hard. But my issue is that influencers have steered people into buying this light with a bias tone due to sponsorships. New growers dont know what they dont know and apples to apples vs. other bar lights in the same price range from other companies, this falls to the absolute bottom of the list out of everything I tested.
