Watch the wet-versus-dry comparison, then follow the close-up hand-trimming demonstration.

The goal is to clean up the bud without cutting away the parts you worked to grow. In this video, I show when to wet or dry trim, how to take flowers off the branch, and where to put the scissors.

Keep the interactive cheat sheet handy for the full grow. This stage connects the drying video to the curing video.

Wet, dry, or a little of both?

Wet trimming means removing the leaves before drying. It can help with dense, leafy flowers in a humid room, but smaller buds can dry quickly once stripped. Dry trimming leaves more foliage on the hanging branches until afterward, slowing moisture loss in a dry room. Neither automatically makes better flower.

A practical middle ground is to remove the large fan leaves and damaged material at harvest, hang the branches, then do the detailed manicure after drying. For a closer look at opening dense flowers, see my poke-and-pull trimming technique.

Cut the leaf, not the bud

Leave a short stem as a handle so you can rotate the flower without squeezing it. Look underneath, find the leaf stem and snip that. A big cola is made of smaller flower clusters, and their stems can sit right beside the leaf you’re trying to remove. The close-ups in the video make this much easier to see.

Lift tucked-in leaves gently and remove unwanted tips without digging into the flower. Some frosty sugar leaf is a presentation choice. Trimming doesn’t create THC or terpenes, and chasing a perfectly shaved shape can mean throwing away resin-bearing material.

Keep the table simple

Use clean scissors, gloves and a tray, with separate containers for finished flower, usable trim and waste. Clean sticky blades as needed. Keep cleaning alcohol away from the buds, flames and sparks, and let the tools dry completely before using them again.

Hand trimming gives you control. A bowl trimmer can save time on smaller buds, but it is less selective, so test a small batch first. However you trim, wet-trimmed flowers still need proper drying. Once dry and trimmed, move on to curing. Don’t seal warm or still-wet flower just because the scissors are put away.
