Quick answer: The 2022 Vivosun VS3000 I tested produced usable flowering intensity across the 3×3 grid shown in the video, stayed reasonably manageable for a compact panel and included better-than-average rope hangers. I did not think its small footprint, coarse 25% dimmer steps or price made it the best value at the time. This is now a historical test, not a current VS3000 buying recommendation.

Old-model warning: Do not assume a new VS3000 is the same light shown here. The old video describes a 300-watt, LM301D, Vivosun-driver unit. Vivosun’s current Canadian listing says 320 watts, unspecified Samsung LM301 diodes and a Sosen driver, while Vivosun’s current official manual says 300 watts and Samsung LM301D. The U.S. VS light-board collection currently contains no products. Those conflicts are enough reason to verify the exact label and hardware before buying. What the 2022 VS3000 actually did well

The most important result came from the grid, not the box. In the 3×3 tent, the outer readings shown in the video stayed above my 500-PPFD minimum while the center was considerably brighter. That gave the old unit enough usable intensity for a conventional 3×3 flowering footprint in my test.

The supplied push-button rope hangers were also genuinely nice to use. The panel had a raised perimeter that kept the diodes off the floor during setup, and the fanless design did not add noise. In my short comparison, it did not feel unusually hot for a 300-watt panel.

What I did not like

The roughly 19.5-inch-square panel left a lot of physical distance between the fixture and the tent corners. A compact board can still throw light outward, but it has to work harder to produce an even footprint than a larger, well-spaced fixture. The board was also built as two repeating halves rather than a mirrored layout.

The video called that pattern uneven before the measurements were reviewed. That wording was too strong. A diode pattern can look odd and still produce a usable canopy map. The right conclusion is narrower: this layout deserved measurement, and the resulting grid passed my 3×3 corner threshold but did not give me evidence to recommend full 4×4 flowering coverage.

The manual dimmer was another compromise. It offered 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% rather than continuous adjustment. If one step was too weak and the next was too strong, the fixture height had to do the fine-tuning.

The old efficiency argument needed a correction

The 2022 video compared a 2.9 µmol/J listing claim with a 2.75 µmol/J number associated with LM301D and treated that as proof of misrepresentation. That comparison mixed component and complete-fixture concepts. A diode package rating is not automatically the wall-plug system efficacy of a finished light. The driver, current, temperature, spectrum mix and optical losses all affect complete-fixture performance.

The better verification is a complete-fixture report showing input watts and total PPF under stated test conditions. A PPFD grid is useful for coverage, but it also cannot calculate fixture efficacy unless the whole output is measured properly. What the 2022 light map means

The map supports three useful takeaways:

  • The old unit was viable in a 3×3: every recorded corner cleared the threshold I used in the review.
  • The center was much brighter: canopy height and plant training still mattered; passing corners did not mean perfectly even coverage.
  • The video did not test a 4×4 grid: saying it “definitely” could not flower a 4×4 went beyond the evidence. The fair conclusion is that this test did not support recommending it for that larger footprint.

Do not copy those old heights onto a current unit. Map the exact light you receive at the real canopy height and record the center, edges, corners and average. The LED measurement tutorial shows the complete method.

The current records disagree with one another, so the old model name cannot settle the question. Ask the seller for the exact current SKU, label photo, driver, power draw and manual. If those details are missing, treat it as a different and unverified generation.

My practical verdict

The 2022 VS3000 was a capable 3×3 light, but it was never a standout value for me. Its grid was better than its compact size suggested, while the coarse dimmer and center-heavy footprint kept it from being an easy recommendation. I would not buy a current same-name unit from this old review alone—especially while Vivosun’s own regional page and manual disagree.

Start with the LED grow-light buying guide, then compare the exact light against the room’s climate capacity. A good light that the room cannot cool is still the wrong light.

Vivosun VS3000 FAQ

Is the current VS3000 the same as the 2022 review unit?

That has not been established. Current Vivosun records conflict on 300 versus 320 watts, the diode wording and the driver, while the U.S. VS light-board collection currently lists no products.

Can the 2022 VS3000 flower a 3×3 tent?

In HWGrow’s old grid, all four corners cleared the 500-PPFD threshold used for the review. That supports the exact old unit as a capable 3×3 light, not every current same-name version.

Can the VS3000 flower a 4×4 tent?

The 2022 video did not map a 4×4 footprint, so it cannot prove a universal yes or no. The center-heavy 3×3 result did not give HWGrow enough evidence to recommend it for full 4×4 flowering coverage.

Does an LM301D label prove the fixture’s efficacy?

No. Diode-package performance and complete-fixture system efficacy are different. Verify wall power and total PPF under stated test conditions, then map canopy uniformity separately.

  1. The Vivosun VS3000 panels now are being shipped with LM301B/H diodes since Dec 30th 2022. This is confirmed. For reference, actual testing has shown the LM301D as only being 2.5% less efficient than LM301B/H’s. So its a moot comparison.

    1. Any way you cut it, false advertising is unethical.

    2. Also until I see a valid review from an unsponsored reviewer, I won’t believe in the update.

      With that said, I never said it was a bad light, just inferior to competition.

  2. I found the light to be very hot in a 3×3 tent. Temp running around 87 with my vent fan and 2, 6″ fans running
